The Rule of 2’s

There has been lots of research on physical activity and sedentary behaviour of late. We’d like to summarise it in some quick rules of thumb:

You may go to the gym every day and work out, but it’s no good if you are mostly sedentary for the rest of the day. Health research tells us we should not sit for longer than 20 minutes at a time as doing so increases your chance of dying younger from heart disease and even cancer. Experts recommend getting up every 20 mins for 2 minute walk about. We suggest you have a go at the Pomodoro Technique as a way of doing really focused work for short periods of time, then having a break.

Also, we should be doing a brisk 20 minute walk every day on top of this. How about a lunchtime stroll? Experts have also declared that standing as much as possible is great, we burn twice as many calories than if we were sitting down. Desks we can stand at while working are arriving in all the best offices. Don’t forget to have your focused stand up meetings every morning.
